SKYLOUNGE by Studio Arthur Casas
Located in the south of Portugal, this house is the perfect hideaway for a contemporary family. Its privileged setting on the banks of two golf courses and the sinuous slope led us to create a house that would take the maximum advantage of the surrounding landscape.
The rectangular plan allows a simple organization of spaces and fluidity between them. The upper volume contains the main spaces of the house organized around an organic patio, honouring the curved lines of the Brazilian masters. The generous common spaces open themselves towards the terrace and the beautiful view over the golf course, erasing the boundaries between inside and outside. The bedrooms, three suites and one master with a private lounge, also enjoy the view over the landscape and the morning sun.
Moving forward into the basement we can find the leisure and sports related program: a sauna, an interior pool and gym with wellness area, that are open to an outdoor terrace where is possible to light a fireplace. The patio brings light into the home theatre, the playroom and lounge. There is also the service and technical areas in this level.
The house’s strongest feature is the wide span that projects the horizontal volume forward, creating a monumental entrance underneath. A voluptuous garden connects both levels through a void. The lower volume, in natural stone, gains weight and melt with the surroundings. The sculptural stair in concrete conquers the space and connects both levels of the house. The upper volume, in opposition is transparent and lighter. The window frames disappear completely inside the walls, bringing closer people and landscape, even on the inside. Mini wave panels unify the volume, are sunshades and also adjust to different situations. Pivoting the bedrooms, they create small private terraces when open, while in the living room they slide, making possible to control the sunlight, and also creating a dynamic façade.
The natural interior finishes like wood and marble where extremely important to the project, as they will bring comfort and cosines into a contemporary space.
On the outside there is a generous wooden deck and swimming pool that melts gently into the ground. The natural inclination of the ground gives the possibility to exist an external circulation between the two levels that makes the pathways richer and more dynamic.
Despite its volume, the house is discreetly located in the landscape and its horizontally reinforces the line of trees of its surroundings.
