Shōnan IX by James Alexander

Free blown hot sculpted glass Shōnan is a development of James’ previous work drawing from his time spent in Japan during his youth. For this work, James has brought multiple glassmaking techniques, from creating bubbles in the glass with bicarbonate of soda to cup casing and cane work. Once bringing all these techniques together on the blowing iron, he hot sculpts the final shape.

James uses glass as a canvas to create abstract sceneries, which draw the viewer to gaze within for the beauty of the canework. The transparent top of his Metamorphic pieces reflect the inner patterning, creating a whole reflected world. He uses the erosion of the coastal area where he grew up as his inspiration and is a freehand glass blower and sculptor.

James gained a BA Hons in Applied Arts at Bournemouth University, where he became fascinated by glassblowing under the tuition of Rob Marshall.

Since then he has worked for numerous studios which include Peter Layton’s London Glassblowing, Michael Ruh’s Studio, Simon Moore’s Studio and James Adlington’s Exmoor Glass as well a demonstrator at the Nationaal Glas Museum in Leerdam Holland.

"My main source of inspiration comes from the beautiful scenery around where I was brought up in Cornwall."
